My guess is it’s one of two things. First, is the litter clean? Some cats will refuse to poop in a box that even has a little pee or poo already in it, because they’re finicky.

Other cats, and I’ve seen this happen, sometimes they get in the litter box with the intention of pooping in it, then they kind of lean over with their butt nearly out of the litter box, and the poop just hits the floor.

So, try cleaning your litter box a lot more often for your finicky cat, or get yourself one of those covered litter boxes, makes it a lot harder for kitty to accidentally hit the floor with poops!

Hope this helps!

My cat has been litter trained for 14 years and has now decided to pee and poop on the carpet. Not all the time, just sometimes. Why? I have no idea. Nothing has changed. Litter is cleaned twice daily.
I just love her and try to talk to her. Punishment is not an option.

If he is urinating in the litter box, the problem is likely a medical issue. If he has impacted anal glands or is constipated, going to the bathroom in the litter box is painful, and he will associate the litter box with pain.

But if he is also avoiding the litter pan for urination, then it is an issue with the litter box. For those, I have posted a link.
