You didn’t mention how old the kittens are. If they are
VERY young, they may be doing it simply because they don’t
know any better (mom hasn’t shown them). I don’t know that
it will necessarily hurt them, but it’s certainly not going
to do them any good. Are they using the litter box for its
intended use?
Ideally, they’ll stop eating when they find out that cat
food tastes MUCH better, and that they’re supposed to POO
in the other crunchy stuff. You may want to switch cat
litter brands or type until they get the idea.
If they are not eating anything but cat litter, and it goes
on for more than a few days, you should probably take them
to the vet to check it out. If they aren’t drinking, they
should go to the vet ASAP.
Kittens learn about the litterbox from watching their mommy. The clumping kind is very bad for them, it could kill them. If they insist on eating the litter, you need to go and buy a litter called "yesterday’s news" it’s newspaper litter, better for them if they insist on eating it. You can get it at a pet store.
You can buy corn-based litter to use until they stop this. Clay clumping litter can block their little intestines and cause major problems. The corn-based litter will pass through — or get the paper kind that’s in larger pellets. Some babies just do this — it’s a phase they’ll grow out of. Just like human babies, everything goes in the mouth!
Clumping litter has been known to kill a kitten, if the kitten ingests enough litter which is basically clay it will actually plug a kittens intestines.
It is recommended that you use a coarse litter, If the problem still occurs you can shred newspapers into small strips this works well, do this until kittens get a little older and try the litter again.
How old are they? Around 3-4 weeks of age they go through this stage. It is part of learning to use it. Just make sure you never use clumping litter. It can clump inside of them and kill them. ~Rachel
Once the are done eating put them in there litter box, they maybe not getting enough food, YES it will hurt them there certain chemicals in the litter to sack up what they do it could kill them.
The best way to litter train kittens is after they are done eating put them in the litter pan. That way they will realize that they is where they should go. As far as eating litter, they do it because the taste and flavor settles their stomachs. It should not hurt them if they don’t eat too much of it.
